Process Modelling and Optimisation Engineer for industrial 3D printer technology
Conducting experiments and improving algorithms in close cooperation with the Xaar3D organisation in Copenhagen and Nottingham.
With reference to the Senior Modelling Engineer you will support the Manufacturing Process Team by leading a variety of technical tasks and projects relating to the improvement of Xaar 3D’s High Speed Sintering technology. You will examine data generated to identify areas for process improvement and generate and implement process and product improvements by creating new software features, algorithms and process settings.
Your tasks include gaining a solid understanding of the physics of the High Speed Sintering process and how Xaar 3D’s technology is applied to the process and at the same time ensuring that technical solutions are aligned to commercial objectives. You will be working with a range of different technologies and colleagues with a wide range of different technical expertise with focus on achieving and maintaining a global leading technical capability in industrial 3D Printing (High Speed Sintering)
You will work with managers and engineers from mechanical, electronics, software and manufacturing disciplines, to define problems to be solved and based on this develop experiments, new/updated algorithms and software input which improves the performance of the printers.
As part of the small Modelling & Process Optimisation Team you will be instrumental in designing and conducting practical experiments independently, but also with support from mechanical and software colleagues as required. You will build up a strong understanding of the control software and algorithms employed in Xaar 3D High Speed Sintering Systems and be able to identify process issues and areas for process and product improvement. You will, as part of the team, develop new approaches to improve process and product and implement these improvements by suggesting hardware and firmware changes that can be applied and by creating new software/algorithms. As part of this you will conduct experiments on equipment, manufacturing 3D Printed parts and measuring their properties, sharing data and experimental approaches with the wider Process Team and advice colleagues on alternative approaches to technical challenges
Qualifications & Experience
We expect that you have a strong educational background such as MSc/PhD in engineering (preferably robotics and mechatronics), or maths and physics. In addition to this educational background you ideally have 2+ years experience in a technology development environment, and feel comfortable working in a mechanical lab. In addition you are a super user in MATLAB and have experience with Python, C&C++, combined with one or more of the below:
- Experience both in experimental code and production code
- Understanding in modelling, i.e. System Analysis, Linear Systems, Robust Parameter Estimation, Black Box Modelling (like Neural Networks), Grey Box Modelling, Stochastic Prediction and Simulation, etc.
- Experience working with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
- Understanding of thermodynamics
- Basic understanding of electrical systems.
- Understanding of modelling and optimisation for example Engineering application of Optimal Design and Real-Time Control, Linear Programming, Convex Programming, Heuristics (Genetic Algorithms, Cross Entropy, etc.).
- Programming skills, in particular experience in Object/Oriented Programming
